The Whakarewarewa Pest Free Trust is a community based volunteer only predator eradication scheme. We are focused mostly around the greater Whakarewarewa area with the aim of increasing biodiversity via community trapping.

There are many options available to contribute as a volunteer with trails available to walkers, runners and bikers of all skill levels and age groups.

We try and target native forest in particular but there are many areas of plantation forest that make for excellent bird habitat, so trapping can be undertaken almost anywhere we have permission to do so.

Invasive species eradication

Via a network of volunteers funded by donations we aim to heavily reduce the number of pests to a level where native species can thrive and where appropriate remove them entirely.

We achieve this with a variety of humane trapping methods to remove invasive species from the environment.
