Whakarewarewa Forest Trails
Starting at the beginning of Tuhoutu Ariki and Tihi-o-Tawa trails complementing the initial and ongoing efforts of Ian Young who has trapped sections of Tuhoutu Ariki since 2015. An initial grid of about 500x500m will be laid out with traps supplied by Red Stag Timber and Kawerau Engineering. This will complete phase 1 as shown below.
Once additional funding has been attained the next stage intends to cover the entirety of the native forest corridor encasing Tihi-O-Tawa trail from the summit to Hill Road. This will require approximately 150 additional traps creating a unique recreational corridor for the forest.
In the future we hope to expand to the beginning of Kataore trail and beyond ultimately creating a native forest with recreational use where native species can thrive.
